Hello! I'm Dr. David Weese, and I'm thrilled to welcome everyone to the 2023 Bahamas Study Abroad Program. Together with Dr. DeVore Sandy Voegeli, twenty-three students will be embarking on an unforgettable journey to San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.
This island is a beautiful and unique region that I had the privilege of exploring in 2018 and I am excited to go back. The island is surrounded by stunning marine life and in steeped in history and culture that dates back centuries. It's the perfect location for our program.
During our time on the island, we will be diving into the waters to explore the marine diversity of the island's coral reefs. The island is home to some of the most unique marine ecosystems, and we aim to develop a better understanding of these environments during our stay. From schools of colorful fish to sea turtles, we will witness the wonder of nature's creation up close. Our exploration of the coral reefs will also include discussions on the impact of human activities on these fragile environments. We will learn about the negative impact of overfishing, pollution, and climate change on the marine ecosystem and aim is to understand our responsibility towards the environment and take steps to protect it.
Along the way, we will the opportunity learn about the island's complicated history and rich culture. We will have the opportunity to learn about the island's plant diversity and its impact on the rich culture, economies, and complicated history of the island. Moreover, we will discuss the evidence and impacts of climate change on these island ecosystems and the steps being taken to mitigate its effects. This program will provide a unique opportunity to witness firsthand how climate change is affecting the island's marine and plant life.
I’m looking forward to sharing our experience with all of you,
Dr. David Weese
