Day Three!

Updated: May 19, 2023

Day three of activities was fun! We started off our day with heading to the San Salvador light house. There was a little hike to get up to it but once we were there, the view was amazing! I believe it is one of the highest points on the island, so we were able to see much of the coast and the wetlands. In addition, there was a stray dog at the light house! This was exciting since most of us have pets at home that we are missing. Since the light house had a climb to the top and a small balcony, we went up in three groups. While we waited, we played with the stray we named “JJ” and we looked at the new environment.

Climbing up to the top of the lighthouse was exhausting. The steps were very steep, and the ceiling was low in a few places. When we go to the top, the way to the balcony was an opening that was about 3 feet by 3 feet. This was all worth it because the top of the light house had the most amazing views, as well as interesting mechanics. We got to see the old kerosine pumps and the lenses that they use for channeling the light. We also learned that in order for the light to spin, they have to crank a weight every four hours. This weight is housed in the center column and will slowly lower and spin the light.

Lunch today was really good! We had fried chicken sandwiches that almost tasted like chick-fil-a from home! Afterwards, a group of us tried out the laundry for the first time. There is only one washing machine that works, and you must hang dry your clothes. This makes them little stiff but I’m just glad I didn’t have to pack two weeks of clothes.

Our second block of exploring took us to Sand Dollar Beach which had much bigger reefs. We all started out in the water, but the waves were rough so only about half of us chose to swim out to the reef. Here we saw massive sea fans, plumes, and much more. We also saw a puffer fish that was almost a foot long! This was a fun experience, despite the Club Med vacationers coming in with their boats. This cut our time short some, but it was still great!

Lastly, we went to a local convenience store to buy some snacks. It was really nice to get some foods we missed and some medicine for our hundreds of bug bites (This is not an exaggeration. Some have counted and found over 100 on each leg). Overall it was a fun and packed day!
